The International Mathematics Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA 2023) was conducted in Singapore on March 24–25, and the math teams from Hong Kong and Macau took home many of the awards. The five teams—four from Hong Kong and one from Hong Kong-Macau—won every team challenge, taking home three champions, one first runner-up, and one second runner-up finishes. This is the first time Hong Kong has triumphed in this global math challenge, IMOYA 2023; and it’s noteworthy that one of the winning teams was a joint Hong Kong-Macau team.
All 16 of the Hong Kong and Macau representatives took first place in five categories and received individual awards totaling 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Students from Hong Kong took first place in Grades 1, 2, 5, and 6 including Kong Pak Him (Kau Yan School), Sit Wai Lam (HKUGA Primary School), Edelweiss Sim Lui Yee (St. Rose of Lima’s College), and Woo Ho Chun Jeff (Ying Wa Primary School), while Kei Ieng Iam (Keang Peng School) from Macau took first place in Grade 4.
The participating countries and regions for IMOYA 2023 include Indonesia, India, South Africa, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Bulgaria, Taiwan, and Malaysia; all of them were greeted by Singapore.
Dr. Lee from Math Sense acts as the team leader and is helping to train and lead the Hong Kong and Macau representatives for IMOYA 2023 officially for the first time, and it broke the previous records by helping 16 representatives from those two cities win a total of 26 awards, including 10 individual and team champions and 9 individual gold medals.
Congrats to all of the winners from Hong Kong and Macau, their parents, Math Sense, and Dr. Lee.
